Olympic Torch Coming to Reading - Get Involved in The Celebrations

News Article

Reading has been selected as one of only 66 areas in the UK to host the Olympic Flame and an evening celebration event as part of its journey around the UK.

The once-in-a-lifetime event will be coming to town on Tuesday 10th July 2012. Reading has been selected due to its rich sporting and cultural identity.

The unique occasion provides an opportunity for the Reading community to play it's own part in the Olympic and Paralympic Games right on their doorstep, and will provide a platform to celebrate and inspire people of all ages to take part in cultural activity.

Reading’s 2012 Partnership Board - representing various sectors of the community - will be leading the way in which residents can get involved in the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

There are hundreds of exciting opportunities for residents of all ages to get invovled in the town's celebrations. They include planning events around the borough, marketing, community management, stewarding, event management and coming up with ideas for community activities which will continue after the Games have finished.

To take part, people need to be able to go to The Cultural Partnership induction workshops and commit to four hours a month in the run up to the Games to help with cultural activities.

Individuals will be given the training and support they need. Places to get involved are limited, so people need to sign up quickly to ensure they don’t miss out.

Reading's plans for a special evening celebration include festivals, a huge outdoor showcase and other events around the borough. This is a fantastic opportunity for people living and working in Reading to celebrate and inspire people of all ages to take part in cultural activity.
