Volunteers help make museum collections more accessible to everyone

People choose to volunteer for different reasons and come to us from different walks of life. Below are the thoughts of two of our volunteers on why they chose to help at Reading Museum and what they have got from it.

Rebecca Tessier

'I started off volunteering at Reading Museum on a Social History cataloguing project. I had moved to Reading having never been before and thought that working with the Museum was a fantastic way to get to know my new town, as well as gaining valuable experience working in collections. It gave me a great insight into the recent local history.

I have been fortunate to also work with the Ethnography and Archaeology collections, and the curators have given me the opportunity to experience a wide range of skills from cataloguing, cleaning and packing objects to selecting and researching items for display. It has also been invaluable to gain an understanding of what goes on behind the scenes, collections management and the focus needed on storage, housekeeping and conservation.

Volunteering at Reading enabled me to get necessary experience for my current job working in collections. I continue to volunteer because it’s an absolute pleasure, Reading Museum has a great team from whom I am learning so much, and I encounter new and interesting objects every day I work.'

Peter Low

'I have had a lifetime interest in history and archaeology. When I retired I was fortunate to find a role as a volunteer with Reading Museum’s archaeology collection.

For 15 years now I have been researching and recording objects at the museum store. It is a constant learning process and I now have an informed interest in many aspects of archaeology. I enjoy the work immensely and look forward to my days here. It gets me out of the house and allows me to work with people whose company I enjoy.

I get satisfaction because what I am doing is necessary, useful and will benefit the Museum and its visitors long into the future.'
